日军得到国军防御方案后，开始准备进攻。卢山和吴纯来饭馆吃饭，实则向小林武义传递情报。日军侦察机频繁出现在宁波上空，一切预示着大战在即。萧寒让政工队的学员们做好临战准备，同时，他提醒林东野，国军防御阵地存在漏洞，遭到林东野的讥讽。萧寒没能说服林东野，果然，日军一支小分队欲通过防御漏洞绕到国军背后。萧寒只能以自己微薄的力量，尽力弥补。回到政工队，他开始布置任务，然后带着江海生、付大虎和杨秋草出发了。1940年7月16日，日军派出40余艘舰艇，30余架飞机，3000名海军陆战队组成的突击部队，发起登陆突击。镇海保卫战打响了。
