1943年年底，浙东抗日游击武装编为新四军游击纵队。三五支队全部换上新式军装，佩戴345A肩章。三五支队的力量也在不断壮大，已经发展到六百多人。可他们的处境更加险恶，国民党将装备精良的五个突击营调到四明山南麓，企图趁日伪大扫荡之际，将我部围困于四明山，重演皖南事变的一幕。在这种形势下，萧寒和王茂林巧妙应对，粉碎了日军的扫荡。1944年，盟军飞机首次实现从中国大陆远航空袭日本本土。一架B-29轰炸机在返航途中出现机械故障，四名机组人员成功跳伞着陆。萧寒部得到总部急电，日军已经获知有盟军轰炸机坠机，正在大肆搜捕，总部要他们不惜一切代价抢在日军前面找到盟军飞行员，并将他们安全送到总部。此时，张恒、冯东野也得到第三战区指令，要他们找到飞行员，阻止日军抓捕和防备新四军搭救。一场抢救盟军飞行员的战斗打响了。
