其实长龄早已看穿无忌身份，故意派武烈假扮金毛狮王，试探无忌虚实，无忌不虞有诈，当众拆穿真相后，眼见长龄舍身护己，遂放心向他道出金毛狮王下落。 无忌发现九真近日无故对他嘘寒问暖，令他快慰非常。后无意中发现九真与表哥卫壁幽会，顿明白到长龄与武烈等处处积虑布下诡计，令他晴天霹雳，一怒之下不辞而别。 当长龄四出找到无忌踪迹时，无忌几番挣扎，二人双双堕下悬崖，二人有惊无验。后无忌乱闯乱撞走入「挑源洞」内，被其明媚景色所吸引，而长龄则困在洞外死守。 无忌在洞里遇上一只白猿，发现其肚上附有一套「九阳真经」，有绝处逢生之感，决意留在洞内修练武功。 常遇春重临胡家，发现青牛夫妇己死去，恐事出有因，立向武当派回报。岱岩等惊闻无忌音讯全无，对其性命安危大表忧虑。
