札差の筑後屋に賊が侵人したときいて主水（藤田まこと）はおっとり刀でかけつける。筑後屋のまわりはすでに捕方にかこまれていた。そして主水は、同心頭の命令で賊の説得にあたられる。やがて南町奉行になったばかりの野心家・高見備前守（川合伸旺）が鉄砲隊をじきじきにひき連れてやってくる。賊を皆殺しにしようというのだ。ふとしたはずみで筑後屋の店内に入った主水は、頭目の仙造（小坂一也）と話し合う。仙造は実は備前守に飼われていた男で、備前守の命令で、備前守がふところ刀にしたがっている井上壱岐守の借金の証文を焼き捨てるため押し込んだという。結局、自分たちは使い捨てだったと気づいた仙造は、侍の汚さにいきどおり、主水に仕事料を託す。
