町の似顔絵師糸柳縫之助に似顔絵を書いてもらった加代（鮎川いずみ）や左門（伊吹吾郎）の妻涼（小林かおり）は、その絵を売れと男にしつこく迫られた。その男は画商蔦屋重兵衛（江幡高志）の配下。蔦屋は、全くの無名ながら天才と呼ぶにふさわしい縫之助の絵に、いま売れっ子の浮世絵師夢中恋路楼（菅貫太郎）の署名を入れて売り、大もうけをしていた。その縫之助が病に倒れた。蔦屋と恋路楼は、最後の大もうけと、医者を買収し縫之助を死に追いやり、買い集めた絵を、夭折の天才画家の遺作と高値で売り出した。彼らの汚いやり口を知った縫之助の似顔絵師仲間は木更津に訴えた。
