翰林学士王安旭，与妻子陈月慧住在门高宅深的「玉琼苑」，此乃皇上所赐的状元府。王安旭在官场上不但很有才名，还有画名，他所绘的仕女图，以妻子画眉所用的黛绿及胭脂作颜料入画，因此画中的美人都栩栩如生。达官贵人，皆以求得王安旭的画为荣。王安旭妻子陈月慧是名闻京城的官家小姐，父亲官至翰林御史，不单才貌出众，琴棋书画无不精通，但由于所嫁的夫君倜傥俊逸，才华举世无双，总是招来了不少女子的青睐，弄至月慧成了善妒、疑心病重之人，终日神经兮兮的。一次，见近身丫头紫嫣对旭含情而笑，月慧即借故冤枉丫头偷其玉钗，没想到这丫头个性倔强，竟投井自尽以示清白。自从丫头紫嫣死后，月慧在家中遇到连串怪事，例如，梳妆台上的东西经常被搞乱；最喜欢的衣裙不翼而飞；刚绣好的图案翌日会变成另一个花样；更甚者，月慧常在半夜听到凄然的鬼哭声。慧起初仍安慰自己，一定是自己在疑神疑鬼。
