昭和28年頃、貴金属を専門に狙う謎の盗賊“薔薇王”が全国に出没し、等々力警部（ハナ肇）はじめ警察は必死で捜査を続けるも、手がかりもつかめずにいた。その薔薇王がある日、京都の豪商・日疋家に脅迫状を送ってくる。日疋家では一人娘・美樹子（渡辺典子）の婚礼をひかえていて、脅迫状の件は一般的には知らされないことになった。美樹子の母・静子（松原智恵子）は、美紀子の婚約相手で唐木元子爵家の謙介（榎木孝明）のことが信用できず、金田一耕助に謙介の身元調査を依頼する。耕助が静子から調査を頼まれたその夜、耕助は謙介から子爵邸に招かれるが、巧みに仕組まれた罠によって睡眠薬を飲まされてしまう。耕助が救い出されたのは3日後、美樹子と謙介の結婚式が行われる日だった…。
