陈掌柜拉走了家珍，并决定将家珍嫁给一直和自己较劲的潘掌柜的儿子潘少爷，择日完婚。龙二看上了徐家的产业，生出了贪婪的念头。福贵得知家珍要和潘少爷成亲的消息，找龙二想办法，龙二为福贵暗出主意。福贵一回家便疯疯癫癫起来。徐太太找郎中给福贵看病，郎中看不出什么名堂。徐太太来找龙二，龙二说，少爷患的是桃花痴，只要把陈掌柜的女儿家珍娶到手，病自然就好了。陈潘两家正准备办喜事。龙二找潘少爷挑拨，说徐少爷和家珍早有关系。潘少爷一听火冒三丈，跑回家把龙二说的话告诉父亲。老奸巨猾的潘掌柜要的是陈掌柜的米行，对这一些流言并不在意。潘少爷只好听从父命。家珍被花轿抬出家门，中途被徐少爷和佃农们劫持。家珍在花轿中看到了抬着花轿的福贵，脸上绽出了笑容。徐太太张罗着让福贵和家珍拜天地。潘掌柜父子和陈掌柜一行人赶到徐家。潘少爷朝着陈掌柜高喊，说家珍早就怀上了福贵的野种，陈掌柜气得说不出话来。
