菊花又为凤霞介绍了一个对象叫二喜，在镇基建队当出纳，是个瘸子。工作组又把二愣的村长撤了下来，满仓又当了村长。工作组不久便撤离了。二喜到福贵家看到屋子很破旧，说这屋不修不行。过了几天，二喜带来了一批朋友们拉着修房子的材料来到福贵家要为福贵修房子。家珍和福贵都觉得不妥，二喜说和凤霞的事没关系，成不成都可以。二喜花了不少钱，还是把房屋给修了。凤霞在省中医院治疗聋哑，中医院派一个十分有责任心的罗医师具体负责。罗医师为了治好凤霞的聋哑病，不惜在自己身上反复扎针做试验。凤霞的情况有所好转，已经有了一点听觉，福贵和家珍都很高兴。福贵和家珍觉得尽管二喜人很好，但总归是一个瘸子，关系到凤霞一辈子的终身大事，还是把修房子的钱先退给二喜，等凤霞回来再说。
