为营救李金嗓，张思德携礼踏入土司山寨。周秉文政委同意留在寨中当人质，换出李金嗓和粮食。藏兵扎西主动请缨为红军当向导。张思德等人向廖文山求证他是否是廖小湘的兄长，廖文山才知妹妹早已参军，两人彼此惦念。牛庆祥告诉张思德，由他们负责保护宋纲过草地。黑老潘和李金嗓陷入沼泽，张思德等人冒险将他们救出。黑老潘不满张思德先救李金嗓，张思德边照料宋纲边安抚黑老潘情绪。陈淑良将毛毯让给冻僵的丁香、廖小湘。大雪后，队伍艰难寻得"红色生命线"。宋纲情况恶化，躺在担架上。水几乎喝完，有些人忍不住喝了黑水后呕吐抽搐。获救战士送粮食给医疗队。丁香为救彩云陷入泥潭，张思德救下丁香，彩云牺牲。饮用水枯竭时天降甘霖，众人接雨解渴。
