张思德许诺山娃子加入红军。谭根红见张思德带伤坚持造船，命山娃子监督其养伤。渡江前夕，红军佯攻迷惑敌军，独立团趁敌松懈展开攻势。激战中，张思德摧毁敌军碉堡并夺得两挺机枪。捷报传开，战士们传唱着他的英勇事迹。张思德冒死救下空袭中受重伤的张行发。1935年6月，红一、四方面军会师懋功准备北上，张思德随军长征前赶制九百多双草鞋。张思德劝服绝食的张行发进食。部队整编的命令传来，牛庆祥、和牛娃子等含泪惜别。牛庆祥作为通信营特务连连长，率张思德等战士保护红四方面军电台台长宋纲。
