紘子（常盤貴子）が晃次（豊川悦司）へ自分の素直な気持ちを書いたFAXを送ってから１週間後、晃次から返事が届く。「君の気持ちには応えられない」という内容に紘子は落胆。そんな様子を見兼ねた幼なじみの矢部健一（岡田浩暉）から、女優の夢をあきらめて「俺と結婚しないか？」と紘子はプロポーズされる。さらにバイト仲間の吉田マキ（鈴木蘭々）が妊娠し結婚すると聞き、紘子の心は揺れる。そんなある日、マキがアルバイト中に倒れ、紘子は居会わせた晃次の手を借り病院へ行くことに。母子ともに大事に至らずに済むが、晃次は絵の仕事が遅れ、その夜、徹夜の作業になってしまう。一方、晃次から嫌われているわけではないと知り安堵する紘子。翌日、徹夜をさせてしまったお返しに晃次が完成させた絵を彼の代理で画廊に届けに行くが、混雑した駅構内で突き飛ばされ、画を破損してしまい…。
