鹤乃屋料理店的老板娘在病逝前将一封信转交给铁平。信中叙述了她作为铁平祖父敬介的情妇生下了女儿芙佐子，而铁平也许是其祖父敬介的亲生子。铁平不相信这样残酷的事实，他跑到医院确认自己与祖父敬介的血型。结果是，铁平的母亲宁子是O型，铁平的父亲大介是AB型，祖父敬介是A型。理论上，A型的铁平既有可能是父亲大介的孩子，也有可能是祖父敬介的孩子。由于高炉爆炸，贷款银行召集了事故责任会议。会上铁平才得知，早前父亲大介承诺的20亿日元追加贷款根本没有到账。为了填补资金空缺，阪神特殊制钢的财务主管不得已向高利贷借款，现在铁平的公司早已是债台高筑了。最后，各贷款银行审议决定将铁平的公司出售抵债。看到父亲对自己如此无情，铁平按捺不住心中的疑问，决定向母亲询问究竟谁才是自己的亲生父亲。
