1960年代后半，阪神特殊制钢的专务万表铁平(木村拓哉饰)充满了希望。阪神特殊制钢是一间专门制造特殊性能钢铁的公司，身为经营者的铁平，因为陆续开发出新技术而接到了许多订单，并满怀雄心壮志决定兴建高炉，让阪神特殊制钢更加壮大。铁平的父亲万表大介(北大路欣也饰)，担任关西著名都市银行阪神银行总裁，也是万表财团的最高统帅。而万表家的女管家高须相子(铃木京香饰)原本是家庭教师，后来却成了大介的情妇，甚至喧宾夺主的取代大介之妻宁子(原田美枝子饰)的女主人地位，掌管了万表家的大权，专门负责拓展万表家的姻族版图。眼看政府积极推动金融改革以对抗外资势力，大介非常忧心自己的银行会被大银行并吞。就在此时，铁平的阪神特殊制钢为了兴建高炉，想向阪神银行申请融资，让大介十分苦恼，而这件事也将大大改变铁平的人生……
