经过悉心调养，齐彬的身体状况终于恢复正常了，可是好景不长，笃姬嫁入将军家的事件又迎来了一个巨大的阻碍。在本寿院的再三劝说下，家定提出条件要求笃姬必须能烤出很好的煎饼，否则此事免谈。另外，为了说服强硬反对此事的齐昭，齐彬以赏花为借口把齐昭招揽到萨摩藩邸，试图让他直接和笃姬见面。恰好笃姬也正在努力学习齐昭编纂的大日本史，以备跟齐昭见面时使用。另一方面，留在萨摩的尚五郎已经厌倦了每天从事无聊的城池勤务，他很羡慕在江户表现活跃的西乡。于是向阿近发牢骚。时间久了，阿近实在受不了听他那些抱怨，于是强硬地命令他不要再来发牢骚。冷漠的态度让尚五郎觉醒了，他十分感激阿近对他的帮助。赏花的日子终于到来了，笃姬不肯听从齐彬等人的劝阻，直接跟齐昭开始辩论。笃姬直言不讳地抗议说，既然大日本史上记载了从唐朝和天竺等很多地方学到的知识，可笃姬的言论激怒了齐昭，就在这时，身在江户城的家定的煎饼。
