时光飞逝，在训练场上，示范蒙古式摔跤动作的张松龄将一个个新兵摔倒在地。此时的张松龄已是副连长，而那位和他军衔相同的连长，正是从三十一师独立团被调拨过来的老熟人——老兵油子廖文化。廖文化其实根本不想来前线，但虽然心中不满，面子上却还是客客气气。两人关系微妙，正连长廖文化成了甩手掌柜，副连长张松龄却忙个不停。张松龄倒也很享受这种忙碌，这会让他暂时忘却心里的悲伤。只是士兵们和张松龄总隔着一段距离，反倒和流里流气的廖文化更亲近。张松龄认真负责地带兵训练，却因为性格孤高，被出身贫苦的士兵们孤立起来。张松龄心中郁闷，廖文化常常拿张松龄开玩笑，有一次调侃他还是个小孩，连媳妇都没有。
