2013年、視界不良のなかアラバマの空港に最終進入中だった夜間飛行の貨物機が林の立ち木に引っかかり滑走路のすぐ手前に墜落、直ちに事故調査が開始される。コックピットでの会話が明らかにされ、シミュレーターでフライトが再現された後、UPS航空1354便で何がうまくいかなかったのか特定するために、調査官たちは通例とは違うアプローチを取り始める。原因は悪天候か、機械の故障か、それともパイロット自身なのか。
