1999年8月31日。ラパ航空3142便のボーイング737が、滑走路が1本しかないブエノスアイレスの地方空港を離陸しようとして激しく震動、直後に墜落した。機体は時速300キロに近い高速で空港の外側フェンスを突き破り、混雑した高速道路を走行中の車両まで巻き込んでガスの施設に衝突炎上するという大惨事に。アルゼンチン中が茫然とするなか、調査の結果明らかになってきた事故の原因はあきれるようなものだった。
