呉服商丸幸の女房おとせ（万里昌代）は、情夫である番頭清七（小島三児）と組んで、亭主の定吉（井上孝雄）を締め殺した。ところが翌日、首に布を巻いた定吉が姿を現わした。驚いたおとせが定吉を埋めたはずの場所を掘り返すと、出て来たのは清七の死体だった。「にせ者が夫を殺し、店を狙っている」と、おとせから仕掛けの依頼を受けて梅安（緒形拳）が乗り出した。定吉には双生児の弟がいて、その伊之助（井上孝雄二役）の仕業らしいが証拠が摑めない。その時、定吉の遺児を抱いたおよし（高野ひろみ）が現われた。
