最后还是玉帝出面，才平息了这场恶战。但二郎神再不敢进峨眉山捉人。老龙王为女儿之死告上天庭，孙悟空在一旁添油加醋。敖广乘机上奏，四公主是知道了广寒宫玉树被摧毁的真相，所以才被灭了口。玉帝大惊。二郎神不得已将自己如何动凡心暗恋嫦娥，如何藏匿了嫦娥的耳环，又如何打坏盘古的睫毛——广寒宫玉树一事从实招来，并进行了一番忏悔。王母娘娘竟然宽恕了二郎神，这引起孙悟空和老龙王的极大不满。玉帝和王母娘娘终于顶不住孙悟空的奚落，又怕他会闹出事来，只好答应可以让沉香作为一个凡人存活。二郎神回府，盛怒之下打死了刘彦昌，并把尸体丢下凡间。刘家村的乡亲，将刘彦昌埋葬了。二郎神告诉三圣母，是由于他向玉帝和王母求情，才免了沉香一死。三圣母将宝莲灯的口诀告诉了他。二郎神却发现宝莲灯已成为废灯，他懊丧地将灯扔掉，让梅山兄弟注意小玉的行踪。哮天犬失去嗅觉，没有用处了，他被贬去看门。
