小莲（徐怀钰 饰）是一只鲤鱼精，生活在大小姐牡丹（孙莉 饰）的池塘里。闲暇中，贪玩的小莲总喜欢化身成牡丹的样子，来到人间游山玩水。一次意外中，小莲被书生张子游（郭晋安 饰）出手相救从而结下了不解之缘。其实，张子游同牡丹早已私定终生，可是牡丹的父亲却擅自将她许配给了将军之子，悲伤的牡丹无力抵抗，虽然小莲企图帮助牡丹从中阻挠，但也无济于事，最终牡丹还是坐入了送亲的轿峦之中。 没想到，天生体弱的牡丹竟然在轿中悲伤而死，与此同时张子游也赶到了现场，情急之中，小莲进入了牡丹的躯壳，化作牡丹的样子同张子游展开了一场惊天逃亡。在之后的日子里，小莲一边要压抑自己活泼的本性，一边还要防止伪装被拆穿。纳闷牡丹为何性情大变的张子游永远都不会想到，一直陪伴在身边的女人竟然早已变作他人。
