罗马帝国，正式名称为元老院与罗马人民。古罗马曾有数百年的共和制历史，自斯巴达克斯起义后，罗马进入了军人执政时代，通过两次“三巨头执政”后，屋大维成为罗马的独裁者，从此进入了罗马帝国时代。 罗马帝国被分为前期帝国（前27年～192年）和后期帝国（193年～476年）两个阶段。前期帝国经朱里亚·克劳狄王朝、弗拉维王朝，至安敦尼王朝（五贤帝时代），被称为黄金时期。后期帝国经伊利里亚诸帝、戴克里先的四帝共治、君士坦丁大帝，至狄奥多西一世死后将帝国正式分为两部分（395年）。476年，西罗马帝国灭亡。东部帝国直到1453年为奥斯曼帝国所灭，史称东罗马帝国或拜占廷帝国。
