这是一个关于现代牧民如何与原始动物相处的故事。 最早的藏地先民，正是由于驯化了一部分野牦牛，才得以在这片贫瘠的土地上生存了下来。先民们把野牦牛写进传说，认为它们是山神的坐骑，而山河也皆是它们的身躯化成。 时至今日，人类和野牦牛的交集仍在继续： 一位从未见过野牦牛的和尚，接到任务，要去重新制作一个在盛大的祈福活动中使用的野牦牛面具，他将如何完成这个任务？ 一支巡护队，为了给一头小野牦牛寻找过冬牛奶，在人类生命禁区羌塘四处奔走； 长江源头村落的牧民，正在试图构建一个与野牦牛互利互惠的商业体系，而这个过程并不容易； 昆仑山畔的一位“吉他手”，牧场被野牦牛占据，尽管他满怀悲悯之心，却也必须面对一个惨烈的现实……
