时值文久三年（1863年）七月。甚夜听说了一则传闻，据说是废弃的瑞穗寺里出现了会吃人的鬼怪。他亲自前往探查，结果发现一只银白狐狸模样的鬼，住在那座荒废寺院中。当甚夜斩杀自称「夕凪」的那只鬼，并将其吞食后，远处却传来了婴儿的哭声。隔天清晨，甚夜照常前往「喜兵卫」，却见一位名叫「夕凪」的女子正等着他归来。
