三十多年前，一寡妇临终将一对孖生婴儿交托两金兰姊妹，兄尚人随养母远嫁南洋一荒岛，而弟则被带来港落地生根，取名毛建树。兄弟二人从此分离，互相不知对方存在。 建树长大成人后，娶得一事业心强的妻子欧嘉丽，且与多年好友陈敬全合资经营一鞋厂，甚无野心，生活优悠。 嘉丽事业心极重，自视甚高，对夫管束甚严，而建树又惧怕非常，对嘉丽唯命是从。 建树盼望嘉丽能为他生下一儿半女，但她不想因生育而阻碍大好前途，故结婚多年仍未有所出。 另一方面，尚人一直生活在南洋一荒岛上，过着穷奢极侈的生活，可是小岛实在太落后，生活刻板沉闷，他常想离岛游玩，却屡遭养母反对。 尚母见尚人已届结婚年龄，为他选妻，尚人独钟情尤如丝。当家人为他铺排婚礼时，尚母突病发垂危，临死前吐露尚人身世之谜，尚人至此方知原来还有一兄弟在世。
