1990年12月3日。濃霧に覆われたデトロイト空港では離陸しようとするノースウエスト航空1482便のDC9が誘導路で迷子になり使用中の滑走路に停止してしまう。その滑走路の逆側からはノースウエスト航空299便のボーイング727が離陸滑走、翼がDC9の胴体を切り裂き8人が死亡する事故となった。調査が進むにつれ、衝突につながった出来事がパイロットの人間性によるものではなかったかという疑いが生じてくる。
