1983年7月8日、リーブ・アリューシャン航空8便はアラスカ州コールドベイからワシントン州シアトルに向かっていた。しかし高度1万9,000フィートで太平洋上を飛行中、4機のエンジンのうち1機のプロペラが離脱、機体下部にあたって穴をあけた。急激な減圧と充満する濃い霧の中、パイロットたちは制御しようとするも、減速することも高度を下げることもできず、操縦桿も動かない。そのまま機体はまっすぐ外洋へと向かっていた。
