2256年、惑星連邦宇宙艦隊所属のバーナム中佐は、ジョージャウ船長とともに干ばつで絶滅の危機にあった惑星を救う。その後USSシェンジョウで、今度は惑星連邦領のはずれにある連星系へ向かい、損傷した恒星間リレーの調査を行う。リレーの損傷原因を調べていたUSSシェンジョウは謎の物体を発見する。
