盛岡での記念対局からの帰り道、台風のため仙台で足止めを食らった零と宗谷。宿泊先を見つけて一息ついた零は、神宮寺からの電話で、「将棋の鬼」とも言われる天才・宗谷の秘密を知らされる。零は、東京に戻った後、対局を反芻しながら宗谷の過去の棋譜を追いかけるのだった。一方、入院していた二海堂は退院し、玉将戦の1次予選から復帰を果たす。
