江戸での剣術修行を終え、龍馬（福山雅治）は故郷の土佐へ戻った。りりしく成長した龍馬の姿に、八平（児玉清）や乙女（寺島しのぶ）ら家族は感無量となる。その後、龍馬は半平太（大森南朋）の道場で仲間と再会し、黒船の目撃談などを自慢げに披露する。ところが、当時、攘夷派の旗頭となっていた半平太の影響を受け、以蔵（佐藤健）らは、なぜ米艦隊を切り捨てなかったのかと龍馬に詰め寄ってくる。龍馬は彼らの現実離れした考え方に戸惑う。ある日、龍馬は弥太郎（香川照之）と土佐一の物知りといわれる絵師・小龍（リリー・フランキー）を訪ねた。龍馬は小龍の博識に感心する。一方、小龍は黒船を見たという龍馬に興味を抱く。後日、龍馬は自分で描いた黒船の見取り図を小龍に見せ「いずれ（船を）造ってみたい」と興奮気味に夢を語る。
