北海道の旭山動物園は本日も多くの入園者で賑わっていた。獣医兼飼育係の坂内（山口智充）始めとするスタッフは、動物の素晴らしさを見てもらおうと張り切っているが、混雑がひどくなるに従い、期待してきた動物の姿が見られないとのお客の苦情が寄せられるようになる。今度はチンパンジー館の構想を練っていた坂内の熱意は次第に揺らぎ始める。そこへ、旭山動物園に憧れていたという獣医の徳永志織（広末涼子）が赴任してきた。しかし人気の動物園の実情に、いらだちや戸惑いを覚える志織。そんな中、さまざまな問題に益々悩みを深める坂内に、事件が起きる…。
