ガダルカナルのアメリカ軍は第一海兵師団を中心に日本軍との戦いを続け、レッキーたちの第一連隊やバジロンたちの第 七連隊が飛行場を守りながら、偵察や戦闘を繰り返していたが、日本艦隊による夜毎の艦砲射撃のため、眠れない日々が続く。慣れない熱帯の環境でマラリアや 食料不足に悩まされながらも、次第に適応していく兵士たち。第七連隊では第一大隊長・プラー中佐が、バジロンの小隊からロドリゲスを伝令に選ぶが…。
