街歩きを趣味とするタモリが、実際に東京近郊や日本各地を散策。古くから残る観光スポットなどをタモリ独自の視点で楽しみながら、現代に残る《歴史の痕跡》を発見。変化のいきさつを空想・推測し、地理学・地質学的な側面を掘り下げ、エピソードを探る。その場所の歴史を味わいつつ、独自の視点・目線でユニークな街歩きを展開し、同時にタモリ独特の軽妙なトークも味わうという“探検・散歩番組"である。 毎回、各分野の専門家やその土地に詳しい人物が、司会のタモリとNHK女性アナウンサーの到着を待ち伏せ、タモリに対して土地柄のクイズを出すというシーンがあり、全体の構成は大方決まっている。しかし、NHKの番組としては珍しく、タモリは台本をあまり気にせずアドリブを交えて収録が進められる。
