NHK的第100部晨间剧。昭和21年初夏，第二次世界战争结束了，战争孤儿奥原夏被柴田刚男带到了北海道的十胜。接纳小夏的奶家柴田家是从北陆来拓荒的移民。刚男与小夏的父亲是战友，两人曾约定在战争中活下来的人要照顾对方的家人。刚男的父亲泰树是个人所共知的固执老头，他嘴上说小夏是不吉之人，但心里却同情这个孩子。早就有心里准备的小夏拼命帮柴田家照顾牛马、挤牛奶。小夏的顽强让泰树感动，他教给小夏生存之道。小夏也渐渐恢复了天真烂漫的孩子气。有一天，小夏偶遇一个画马画得特别好的少年山田承阳。天阳让小夏领略到当时在美国流行的动画电影的魅力。那宛如梦幻的动画世界让她激动不已。上高中后，受天阳影响，小夏开始梦想从事绘画方面的工作。就在这时，她得知当年被迫分离的哥哥在东京工作。于是，她启程前往东京
