在比利时的佛兰德安特卫普的小村子里。住着一位叫尼洛的少年，他一起帮助运送牛奶的爷爷杰汉并且在一起工作著，虽然生活贫穷但是过的很幸福。他有一个小小的梦想，就是关于画画的事情，他希望有一天可以看见鲁本斯的绘画。 有一天，尼洛保护被主人任意驱使然后被丢掉的狗，帕特拉修，然后一起生活着。村子里的第一有钱地主柯杰兹的女儿爱露娃和尼洛是很好的朋友。但是柯杰兹和村人就是看不惯，因为尼洛太穷了。因此尼洛觉得总有一天摆脱贫穷与达成绘画的梦想，也可以希望在将来有一天能够化解柯杰兹与村人们的横沟。 在杰汉去世后，尼洛因为被误解而失去原本的工作，尼洛把最后的希望寄托在绘画上，但是竞赛结果却落选了。之后从家出来的尼洛与帕特拉修他们，在夜晚大教堂的雪光下，看着鲁本斯的绘画，并露出满意的笑容阖上眼睛，随即他们便蒙主宠召了。
