原著漫畫從2004年4月開始連載到07年4月，講述被安排到死刑囚牢房擔任獄警的直樹，在接觸到了對死亡完全沒有任何恐懼的死囚之後，內心產生了動搖。更和殺害了自己親人的同齡死囚犯阿滿建立了友情，通過對這段友情的描寫，開始探討死刑是否必要。 在劇中扮演菜鳥獄警及川直樹的是伊藤淳史，而和直樹有著深切羈絆的死囚渡瀨滿則由首次演出民營電視臺日劇的ARATA演繹。本劇監製森田升對本劇充滿了期待：“希望可以打造一部比以往講述人性的影視作品，更加震撼人心的作品。 伊藤淳史談到自己此次的角色表示：“在這個世界上有許多種職業，而這次是我感覺最沒有臨近感覺的。”扮演死囚的ARATA則說：“這樣的角色人生中失去了很多，我用我最大的想像力去演繹，在作品中不斷思考。”
