曾经的顶级赛车手神崎次郎（木村拓哉 饰）因为和同处车队的队友发生纠纷而被解雇。葬送自己赛车生涯的次郎失魂落魄的回到了家乡，一方面希望在这里有新的开始，另一方面却也打不起精神来。 自己的父亲和姐姐经营着一家名为“风丘之家”的孤儿院，育有12个孩子。这些孩子各有各的性格，本是孤身一人的他们在这里得到鸟居元道（堺雅人 饰）、水越朋美（小雪 饰）等保育员的照顾。而次郎的回归让这个大家庭发生变化，不仅影响着这些孩子，也改变了次郎的很多想法。这当中发生了不少感人的故事，次郎发现不仅赛车需要引擎，生活和人事也需要它的动力，一出家庭剧在风丘之家拉开序幕。
