De mislukte tovenaar Rinzwind (David Jason) bakt zo weinig van magie dat hij maar één bezwering kent. En hij weet niet eens wat die voor uitwerking heeft. Dit verklaart enigszins waarom hij van de Gesloten Universiteit wordt gestuurd. Moedeloos overweegt hij zichzelf in de rivier te werpen die door Ankh-Meurbork stroomt, de grootste stad van de Schijfwereld. Hij wordt echter afgeleid door de komst van Tweebloesem (Sean Astin), de buitensporig optimistische eerste toerist van de Schijfwereld. Maar bovenal wordt hij afgeleid door de Bagage van de toerist, die niet alleen gevuld is met zuiver goud maar ook kan wandelen. Dit trekt uiteraard de aandacht van veel dieven, moordenaars en andere misdadige inwoners van Ankh-Meurbork….
