In de oudheid werd het Romeinse leger als volkomen onoverwinnelijk beschouwd. Prachtige successen op de slagvelden werden triomfantelijk behaald door de inspanningen van een uitzonderlijk sterk Romeins leger. De beste eenheden waren duidelijk de zware infanterie. De legionairs, zoals deze eenheden werden genoemd, waren buitengewoon capabel, gedisciplineerd en volkomen onbevreesd – bijna als mythische helden. Toch waren het gewone mannen van vlees en bloed. Hoe zag hun leven eruit? Welk type man werd legionair? Hoe leefden legionairs en waar droomden ze van? Wat verbond hen zo onlosmakelijk met elkaar dat ze bereid waren hun leven te riskeren voor andere soldaten?
