Uit angst voor een kinderachtigheid die nog steeds in Marie-Antoinette leeft, stuurt keizerin Maria Theresa haar vertrouweling, graaf van Mercy-Argenteau, naar Frankrijk met de missie om Marie-Antoinette te leren opgroeien tot een geliefde koningin van het Franse volk.
