1990～96年に「週刊少年サンデー」に連載された、藤田和日郎のコミックを原作としたOVAシリーズ全10話。主人公の潮（うしお）と妖怪・とらのユニークなやり取りと、バイオレンスな妖怪退治描写は、原作ファンにも好評。第1～6話までが第1期、第7話以降が第2期とされ、スタッフが若干異なるほか、主題歌も変更されている。監督は『魔法のプリンセス ミンキーモモ』『ポケットモンスター』シリーズで知られる湯山邦彦。SDキャラが活躍する番外編「コミカル・デフォルメ劇場」も作られた。 中学生の蒼月潮は、自宅の蔵で500年間も“獣の槍”に縫いとめられていた妖怪を解放してしまう。しかも500年分の妖気が一気に放出され、周辺の低級な妖怪たちが集まる結果に。潮は妖怪に“とら”と名付け、再び封印しない代わりに妖怪退治に協力するよう約束させる。
