助太刀屋助六
他人の仇討ちに首を突っ込んで報奨金をいただく“助太刀屋”の助六。久々に故郷へ帰った彼は、母の粗末な墓に誰かが花を供えていたことを知る。思い当たる節もないまま、新たな仇討ちが始まると知って商売っ気を出す助六だが、すでに助太刀は足りているという。がっかりした助六は、足を向けたなじみの棺桶屋で、今度は当の仇である片倉梅太郎なる男と出会う。だが、仇の割に、彼には悪党らしいところがないと疑問を持つ。
