フランス代表チームが中国代表に勝利した直後、フランス代表を率いるイヴ・グルアン監督が何者かに殺される事件が発生する。そして混乱の中、彼が身につけていた高価なダイヤの指輪“ピンクパンサー”が消えてしまう。捜査を指揮するドレイフェス警視は、意外にもドジなクルーゾー警部を捜査に抜擢する。そうして世間の注目を彼に集中させ、自分はのびのびと捜査を進めて手柄を独り占めにしようという魂胆だったのだが…。
